Laili Island has two main civilisations: Hiza Calndom and Tribe-Ali. Hiza Calndom operates as a monarchy with some key differences from monarchies of old times. All titles within the castle and Nobles Districts are gender neutral.
The ruler of Hiza Calndom is called the High Caln. They are responsible for keeping the Calndom safe and stable. Their duties include, but are not limited to, regularly reviewing written requests from citizens, protecting against attacks from threats (such as Wild Boars), and monitoring immigration to and from Tribe-Ali.
Pictured here is High Caln Rana Peacock. She was known to be a strict ruler.
By the time a dragon becomes High Caln, they must already have a spouse. During their reign, the spouse is referred to by the title of Caln. The Caln is has a variety of tasks that aid the High Caln and their family. These can include providing and caring for young, acting as a royal advisor to their spouse, and temporarily ruling in the absence of the High Caln and any potential heirs.
Pictured here is Caln Octavius Peacock. Despite marrying High Caln Rana on her coronation day, their relationship was cold and strained, to the point that they slept in different rooms.
At any point in the first five years of a High Caln’s reign, they can take on a Prinze to be their heir. Most dragons choose their Prinze in the fourth year of their reign, right before the fifth year deadline. The Prinze is allowed to choose their new surname, the colour and fabric of their cloak, and design a crest to be engraved on the but on on their cloak. They are then taught by the High Caln how to rule Hiza Calndom until such a time as the High Caln passes away.
Pictured here is Prinze Gerold Everhart. He was chosen as Rana’s heir at fourteen years old, a common age for a Prinze to be chosen.
Any legitimate offspring of the High Caln are called Duchies. They often hatch during or shortly before their parent’s reign and grow up in the castle. Once the High Caln passes away, all of their offspring move out of the castle and into the Inner Noble District, where they take on the title of Laird and become the highest ranking nobles. The spouse or eldest of the offspring typically becomes head of the house at this point.
Pictured here is Duchy Carmina Peacock. She hatched shortly after High Caln Rana’s coronation and, when her mother died, became head of the Peacock house at only fifteen years old.
The spouse of any Duchy or Prinze is given the title of Laird. They are typically responsible for upholding the family’s perception, especially during the early years of their marriage, when they are under greater scrutiny of other dragons.
Pictured here is Laird Nash Peacock, the husband of Carmina. Unlike Rana and Octavius, Carmina and Nash have a loving relationship with each other.
All further offspring after the High Caln’s offspring are referred to as Lairds. By the time these dragons come along, the High Caln that started their family is long gone and they are responsible for continuing their family’s name and upholding their reputation. Nobles often marry into other noble families, often to gain a higher rank. This is considered fine as long as the head of the house is directly descended from the High Caln that started the family. When the head of the house passes away or retires, their eldest offspring is often the next to fill the role. However, any dragon can be head of the house as long as they live in the Manor, share the surname, and are a descendant of the family rather than married into it.
Pictured here are Lairds Adair, Brighton, and Ryker Peacock, the three sons of Carmina and Nash. One day, one of them will take over the role of head of the house from their mother, though they are still undecided on who will take the responsibility.
