Pets are found in many homes throughout Hiza Calndom. Not everyone likes keeping a pet, but some dragons can't imagine living without one. This is a quick run down on the four most popular pets.
Ravens are one the only pets that you can never really keep one of and aren't typically contained to a cage or yard. Due to their high intelligence and complex social structure, most raven owners start out by simply offering kindness to wild ravens in the area. They offer food, shelter, safe places for nests. Next thing they know, they suddenly have a group of ravens following them around, living in or near their home, and offering protection from perceived threats.
Some ravens can be raised from hatching to create a closer bond between owner and pet. These ravens will often spend most or all of their time with their dragon caregiver. They will perch on a shoulder, wing, or horn, preen their owner's fur, fly alongside their owner, and act as judge of their owner's friends and acquaintances. Most owners find this endearing, though a few may become frustrated at their raven acting aggressive towards others.
Slinkies are a small pet that are popular among farmers, bakers, chefs, and any other dragons working with food due to their abilities for hunting small rodents and other pests. They're also popular with fledglings as a first pet. They look a bit like a cross of a cat and a weasel with retractable claws and semi-opposable dew claws that help them grab and climb. They are also prone to bouncing and take falls with relative ease.
Slinkies have a summer coat and a winter coat. During the warmer months, a slinky tends to have short brown, tan, or cream fur. Over winter, however, their coat lightens into a silver or grey and grows extremely long. They become very fluffy in order to keep warm. Even in summer, the prefer the heat of fires or Fire Dragons.
Bristlebacks are large pets that have to be highly trained and kept active to prevent them from becoming aggressive towards their owners. Originally domesticated for their ability to take down wild boars, bristlebacks are protective of their perceive pack and can become dangerous in an instant. Because of this, they are typically preferred by farmers or dragons with lots of free time to train and exercise them.
Bristlebacks have two key traits that make them a unique choice. They have a mane of fur that surround their neck and runs down their spine. Most of the time, this fur lays flat. But when surprised or threatened, bristlebacks can make this fur stand on end, making them appear bigger and more threatening. The other trait is their pouch. Bristlebacks are marsupials and raise their young using their pouch. Because of this, a bristleback mother may have up to three litters of pups at any given time. Litters vary between one and three pups each.
Foxes are a mid-sized pet that is frequently seen in the yards or homes of middle class dragons. They serve as pest control, catching rodents, and are a popular choice for families due to their size and trainability. Those who don't want "gifts" left behind by slinkies, are spooked by the size of bristlebacks, and don't want to befriend a flock of ravens will choose a fox instead.
The strong smells and otherwordly screams of foxes might make a human hesitant to adopt one, but dragons don't find these traits nearly as bothersome. Many are even able to train foxes only shriek on command and relieve themselves outside, making the immediate downsides much more manageable.
