The castle of Hiza Calndom is responsible for housing and protecting the royal family. The castle started out as a fort, designed to protect leaders from the wild boars that were everywhere, but it has since turned into a place of luxury for the most important dragons of Hiza Calndom.
The castle is made up of four floors: the basement, ground floor, second floor, and third floor. The third floor is where the High Caln and their family reside. There are five bedrooms alongside the library, sunroom, and gallery. Being allowed on this level is a show of how important you are, either as royalty, guard, or personal servant.
The second floor is where the throne room resides. Next to it are a pair of offices, used by the High Caln, head of guard, and head servant to file paperwork. Across from those are the spare bedrooms. These are rarely used, but are usually for those betrothed to a member of the royal family before their wedding, or for royalty if the High Caln’s family becomes extensive.
The ground floor has a large main room where everyone in the castle passes through during their day. From this room, dragons can access the upper floors, the basement, the great hall, kitchens, guardroom, servant's quarters, and bathhouse with ease. It is also the only way to access the castle’s gardens, which boast an array of plant life, and a fountain, gazebo, and hedgemaze for dragons to explore.
The basement is where the dungeon, training arena, and pantry are found. The dungeon used to be the only place criminals could be held after conviction. However, that has since changed and the castle dungeon is rarely, if ever, used. The training arena is used by guards to hone their offensive and defensive capabilities. It’s also sometimes used by the royal family to practice elemental usage.
The floorplan and design of the castle isn’t the only thing to consider about it, however. In order to keep up with the various chores involved in keeping the castle clean and functional, there are many dragons who reside as staff. They are divided into guards and servants.
Guards are responsible for ensuring the safety of the castle and royal family. The head guard arranges work shifts, training, and hiring. Usually, guards stick with an assigned role: bodyguard, gateguard, patrolling, or wallguard.
Gateguards wait at the gate to the castle and question all dragons who attempt to enter. Unauthorised or suspicious dragons are turned away. Wallguards sit atop the fence posts that encircle the castle and gardens and watch both the sky and the ground for anyone trying to enter or exit the castle grounds.
Bodyguards are assigned to one dragon, usually the High Caln or Prinze, and follow them in day to day life, protecting them from any and all dangers. Patrolling guards wander the castle and gardens in set routes, watching for suspicious activity. During peaceful times, these roles are few and far between.
The role of Servant is typically an umbrella term for a wide range of duties. These range from personal servants, cooks, cleaners, launderers, gardeners, and more. The head servant arranges work shifts and hiring. They also supervise the duties being completed to ensure everyone is completing their job.
Due to the large range of responsibilities, the servant’s quarters are larger, and sometimes more cramped, to ensure all jobs are being fulfilled. Most dragons work in the kitchens or clean the castle daily. A few work in laundry, the bathhouse, or garden upkeep.
Personal servants are considered a lucky few. Each member of the royal family has one servant assigned to them to cater to their whims. Most royals are content with letting their personal servant clean their room, wake them in the morning, and wash their used cloaks. Others want to be followed by their servant at all times, in case they have any demands. When not working under the whims of the royal family, personal servants discuss plans and timetables with the head servant and help out around the castle.
There are also some dragons who don’t live in the castle. These are dragons who are rarely needed. Doctors and pastors are among these dragons. They reside in the Noble Districts, within a corresponding building where any noble can visit them at any time. Doctors and nurses working in the Noble Districts are considered constantly on call in case of an emergency in the castle or one of the manors. Pastors in the Noble Districts hold weekly sermons but also visit the castle or manors when requested.
